The book was called THE RAGING MOON by Peter Marshall (Ace Books, 1964). I still have it. Many paragraphs are now underlined. The book is about two crippled teenagers in a home for like people who fall in love and who ask the eternal question: "why?" The book spoke to me then and it speaks to me now because it's not just about two teenagers who can't use their limbs. It's about all of us. All of us who are different; and make no mistake about it -- all of us ARE different. Here is the paragraph that I use most often when quoting from this book. It says it all. “And then in a quiet voice, almost as if she were talking to herself, as though she had forgotten the existence of the others, Annette said: ‘Where will it end? Where will the line be drawn? And who will draw it? Should we all die, all of us in this room? We’re crippled, not much use to the community; we’re unsightly even. Why not clear us out of the way? Mercifully, of course. It would be a good thing, a humane act. We have suffered. We suffer now. But who will kill us? And, after us, the mentally ill because they’re suffering, too. Then there will be a world without cripples or lunatics. A perfect world? Or a snowball. A snowball running away with itself. Running over the cripples and the lunatics, then the ones with the strange religions, then the ones without any religion, then the dissenters and the noncomformists, then left-handed people, then dark-skinned people and yellow people and people with warts and striped people, and then drunkards, teetotalers, fornicators, virgins, criminals, homosexuals, Ban-the-Bombers, Keep-the-Bombers, gypsies, all the people who are different. Then there will be a perfect world. When the snowball stops. A perfect world with one person in it, the person who did the merciful killing of everybody who was different from himself, which was everybody else in the entire bloody world. And he will then commit merciful suicide because of the silence. ... Who’s going to draw the line?’ ” Sibyl's Defining Lyrics: ...the less I seek my source for some definitive, the closer I am to fine. -from "Closer to Fine", Indigo Girls Take the time and I'll sit down beside you And we'll see so many beautiful things We'll get to know each other and when we're through We'll turn to the world and say 'Thank you'. -from "Thank You", Rosanne T.
